Espresso Broadband plc and top children's authors liven up literacy hour by turning books into broadband

10th January 2001

Featured on stand M87 will be 6 new author modules for Espresso for Primary Schools, one for each school year, designed to support the National Literacy Strategy in the primary classroom and giving children the chance to come face to face, through video clips, with the authors of the books they encounter at home and in school. Integrated with the video clips are activities, links to relevant websites and ‘Find Out More’ printable resources, as well as a ‘Staffroom’ that offers teacher support and lesson plan ideas.

As part of each module, a ‘Story Time’ section has the authors reading from their books; Shirley Hughes reads ‘Lucy and Tom at the Seaside’ for Reception year, Catherine and Laurence Anholt read ‘Little Copy Cub’, ‘A Kiss Like This’ and ‘Camille and the Sunflowers’ and Allan Ahlberg reads 'The Jolly Postman and Other People's Letters' for Years 1 and 2.

Year 3 pupils can watch Allan Ahlberg, reading 'Cops and Robbers’, ‘The Jolly Postman and Other People’s Letters’ and two of his poems 'Please Mrs. Butler' and 'The Supply Teacher'. ‘I’m Telling You, They’re Aliens’ is read by Jeremy Strong for Year 4, whilst Anne Fine reads extracts from ‘Crummy Mummy and Me’, ‘Diary of a Killer Cat' and 'Flour Babies' for Year 5. Year 6 pupils can enjoy ‘The Sheep-Pig’ read by Dick King-Smith.

The authors also talk on a range of subjects such as what it is like being an author, how they get their ideas, the process of writing a book, working with illustrators, publishing a book and tips for children who want to become writers.
