Igniting
creativity in Key Stage 1 English pupils, 'Story Starts' is the brand
new module from Espresso Education - creator of the award-winning 'Espresso
for Primary Schools' service. Incorporating 16 real-life video stories
with supporting photos and activity worksheets, this latest module imaginatively
fulfills Early Years curriculum objectives.
'Story Starts' covers four genres: Adventure, Funny, Scary and Amazing. Each category comprises four video stories which encourage the viewer to use their imagination to extend or complete the tale. Stories include 'The Hamster With a Bus Pass' (Funny), 'Ghost Hunt at The Royal Albert Hall' (Scary), 'Buried Treasure' (Amazing) and the 'Flying Sheepdog' (Adventure).
The narrated video stories can be stopped and rewound at any time, whilst multimedia 'drag and drop' games involving the matching of words to objects in the story can also be played.
Each video is accompanied by activities that support the Literacy Framework including photographs for sequencing games, word banks and interactive storybooks. Each story also hosts links to other relevant websites.
In every section there are various methods of encouraging pupils to begin their own stories using the theme of the story they have studied. These include giving children the beginning of a story and asking them to complete it or imagining that they are one of the characters in the account.
As always, the Espresso Staffroom is on hand to offer teachers advice on how the module can be incorporated partially or fully into English lessons whilst demonstrating how it covers the objectives of the National Curriculum.
Catharine Slade, Producer of Espresso's Primary Schools service, explained:
The Government has set out very definite objectives for the level of literacy for Key Stage 1 pupils and 'Story Starts' aims to help teachers to inspire higher levels of creativity whilst improving pupils' use of narrative.
