100,000 pupils throughout England and Wales now enjoy Espresso's video-rich educational content

15th January 2002

Espresso Education's award-winning Espresso for Primary Schools service is now used by more than 100,000 pupils across England and Wales, strengthening Espresso's position as the world's leading provider of broadband content services to schools. Supplying to an impressive 44 Local Education Authorities (LAs) including Redcar, Staffordshire, Knowsley and Merthyr Tydfil, Espresso doubled its user base in 2001, with over 450 schools now subscribing to the service. Espresso also provides its service to many Education Action Zones (EAZs) across the country including Bristol, Kings Cross and Sunderland.

A pupil using Espresso for Primary SchoolsEstablished in 1998, Espresso's multimedia educational resource is an imaginative, fully-indexed and searchable resource featuring video clips from ITN, newspaper reports from The Telegraph and specially filmed video from Espresso's in-house production team. The Espresso for Primary Schools Service contains an impressive 14Gb of data and the Secondary Service - launched at BETT 2002 - already boasts 6Gb, all linked and cross-referenced to national curriculum attainment targets.

Currently, Espresso consists of more than 1,000 video reports, 1,000 print media reports, 500 printable resources, 300 'cached' websites and 400 learning activities. The service has been designed to meet two main objectives. First, to stimulate children and teach them skills relevant to their Key Stage, and second to provide a rich resource that makes planning and researching lessons enjoyable and stress-free for teachers. Pupils also benefit from access to Espresso's use of contemporary TV programmes and news footage, which are re-dubbed for greater relevance to the national curriculum and bring current affairs from around the world, such as the 'War Against Terrorism', into the classroom.

Lewis Bronze, CEO of Espresso Education, commented:

As a pioneer in its field, Espresso delivers a service that is unmatched by any other provider of educational material. We are delighted to be working with so many forward thinking, progressive LAs, EAZs and individual schools. The number of schools subscribing to Espresso has reached such an impressive number because of the originality of the service and its commitment to raising standards in education - specifically in literacy, numeracy and ICT performance.

Unlike other educational content providers, Espresso avoids the frustration of download delays on the Internet and CD-ROM's by using satellite technology to deliver its weekly information updates to schools. A satellite dish and Espresso box - costing £1875 - are required to receive and store the information. For the average Primary School a subscription fee from £5 per pupil is payable yearly.
