20th Century Archive - Espresso brings to life historical events of the last century for Key Stage 2 pupils

26th February 2002

One of the resources in the 1960s sectionDesigned to aid chronological understanding of events, people and change in the last 100 years, 20th Century Archive is a brand new history module from Espresso Education. Intended to help pupils develop a real feel for the era, 20th Century Archive incorporates over 60 video clips and factual information with authentic documentation such as ration books and video footage of the events that have shaped our past.

The resource, which is designed to support the History Curriculum at Key Stage 2, is divided into the ten decades of the last century. Within each decade, sub-sections look in more detail at topics including fashion, famous people and transport of the time. It includes footage and photographs of memorable moments from the past century such as the moon landing, the Blitz and the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.

In addition to these 'history-defining' moments are historical references from everyday life such as rationing during the war and trips to the seaside in the twenties, as well as interviews with people talking about their personal experiences. This gives pupils a holistic look at the period and in-depth knowledge and understanding of the events and people of the past.

Fact-files, historical documents and artifacts including articles from the Daily Telegraph, war posters, maps and photographs accompany the high quality video footage. This variety of materials enables pupils to investigate a chosen theme, such as fashion, and discover how it has changed through the decades using the module as a research tool.

Espresso's CEO, Lewis Bronze, comments:

We are very proud of this piece of work. Once again, Espresso is showing how we imaginatively combine video archive with excellent educational messages. It's the kind of resource teachers won't want to be without once they have seen how much material it puts at their pupils' fingertips.

20th Century Archive supports the QCA Schemes of work, including the specific unit 'What was it like for children during the Second World War and how has life in Britain changed since 1948?', and aids development of cross-curricular skills such as literacy and numeracy.
