Espresso
Education launched the latest addition to its 'Your Espresso' range,
'Go On And Learn', last week at the home of Sunderland Football Club
- The Stadium of Light. Present at the launch was Sunderland football
star Darren Williams, who appears in the module, and The Right Worshipful
The Mayor of Sunderland, Councillor Ken Murray. Pupils from schools
in Sunderland Education Action Zone (EAZ) were also given the chance
to test out the new resource for the first time at the event.
Produced in conjunction with Sunderland Football Club and Sunderland EAZ, Go On And Learn (GOAL) uses football as a stimulus and has been designed to help motivate pupils and improve literacy and numeracy in the 16 primary schools within Sunderland EAZ.
Filmed at The Stadium of Light, the resource contains over 35 minutes of full-screen, high-quality video including interviews with the team manager, team coach and a local sports reporter as well as video footage of Sunderland's Premiership match against Charlton. Football was chosen as the subject matter of this latest Your Espresso module on account of its ability to motivate the children in the area. Sunderland Football Club is extremely family-orientated and has a large percentage of family season ticket holders.
Linda Anderson, Head Teacher, Witherwack Primary School, Sunderland, said:
Football is an important part of our local community and appeals to both boys and girls. We are delighted that it has been chosen as a key motivator for learning. These materials will enable children to access key skills in literacy and numeracy and help restore some of the fun into learning. We are really looking forward to using Go On And Learn in school.
Jean Rowton, Senior Producer, Espresso Education, said:
Video and football together in a multi-media package motivate even the most reluctant learners. It is great to see young fans tackle creative writing and even maths through this football module. It's a totally new way of learning.
Any LA or EAZ can apply to have a Your Espresso created for their schools. It can either take the form of an add-on module for those subscribing to the 'Espresso for Primary Schools' broadband service, or can be delivered on CD-ROM for non-subscribers.
