Espresso is delighted to announce the launch of “Finding out about Food”, its latest module made in partnership with CLEO (Cumbria Lancashire Education Online).

It’s a module for key stage 1 level pupils, and looks at the three main stages of the design process – investigate, disassemble and evaluate – as well as containing practical, differentiated tasks which will guide children to design and make their own menus.

All the specially-shot video created for the module was made in Cumbria and Lancashire, and features regional foods and locations.  The work has been conceived and built in close co-operation with subject experts from CLEO, and from Cumbria & Lancashire local authorities, with additional specialized assistance from Professor Clare Benson, Director of the Centre for Research in Primary Technology.

This module provides support for all three stages of the design process with material for investigative, disassembly and evaluative activities and focused practical tasks which lead to a design and make activity.

OFSTED reports suggest that very little designing with food is done at key stage 1. It is hoped that this module will provide a model for activity in this area and support the development of a range of skills and knowledge including:

“Finding out about food” is the third Espresso module produced in partnership with CLEO.  The others are “People who help us”, for Foundation stage and “Performing Stories”, a key stage 2 workshop which looks at storytelling in several different forms, based on traditional Lancashire & Cumbrian tales.

Since 2003, virtually all 800 CLEO primary schools have subscribed to the Espresso service.
