Accessibility

Espresso believes that web content should be accessible to everyone, and we are working hard to make Espresso even more compatible with speech browsers and other assistive technologies.

The Espresso service has many accessibility features, including:

  • alternative text for images
  • audio equivalents for key text
  • audiobook versions of news stories
  • large, clear and easy-to-use navigation
  • consistent layout and use of icons
  • clear and simple use of language
  • strong contrast between text and background
  • resizable text
  • hypertext links that make sense out of context
  • separation of presentation from content
  • layouts created using CSS rather than tables
  • logical underlying document structure
  • many multimedia activities can be used with switches

We follow the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0 where applicable, and work closely with SEN schools to ensure we meet their accessibility requirements. We are in the process of implementing the following accessibility features:

  • accessible Flash animations and activities
  • improved compatibility with screenreaders like JAWS (content is read before navigation, minimal markup)
  • alternative text for multimedia files (videos, sounds, etc)
