Inclusion

How can Espresso help in developing a more inclusive curriculum?

The Espresso service is intrinsically inclusive - as it uses visual material to: illustrate key concepts; provide opportunities to develop key skills; and extend children's knowledge of the wider world.

All elements of the service take into account the diversity of learning needs, cultural backgrounds and interests of the children who will use it. We believe it is important to:

  • cater for different learning styles
  • build on the children's interests and cultural experiences
  • use materials that reflect social and cultural diversity and provide positive images of race, gender and disability

The design of the site is guided by internationally agreed standards on web content accessibility (read more...). Throughout the site we aim to offer consistency in design, functionality and the icons and links we use for navigation.

Espresso is committed to extending the support provided to schools who are seeking to develop a more inclusive curriculum and a number of extra features will be added over the next year. We aim to respond to the principles for inclusion described in the General Teaching Requirements of the National Curriculum by introducing new elements and enhancing the organisation of existing resources to facilitate their use with children with particular learning needs.
